Alaska Has No Medicare Advantage Plans: Medigap Is Your Primary Option

Alaska is one of the only states in the country where Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are not available. This means Original Medicare plus a Medigap supplement is the standard coverage path for all Alaska seniors. If you are moving to Alaska from another state, you cannot keep a Medicare Advantage plan. Choosing the right Medigap plan is especially important here.

No Medicare Advantage available in Alaska
State Farm and USAA both A++ rated in Alaska

Alaska is unique among all 50 states: Medicare Advantage plans are not available here. That means Original Medicare plus a Medigap supplement is the primary way for Alaska seniors to manage their healthcare costs. With over 75,000+ Alaskans enrolled in Medigap, the market is smaller than most states, but the coverage options are solid.

Plan G is the most popular choice for new enrollees, covering nearly all Medicare out-of-pocket costs except the annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). State Farm offers the lowest Plan G in Alaska at $137/mo in Anchorage, with an A++ AM Best rating. Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska is the dominant local carrier at $197/mo, with strong provider relationships and a $5/mo discount for automatic payment enrollment.

Alaska does not have a birthday rule, so your 6-month Open Enrollment Period when you first turn 65 and enroll in Part B is your most important enrollment opportunity. After that window closes, carriers can use medical underwriting to deny your application or charge higher premiums. Compare carefully before you enroll.

💡 Eddie's Pro Tip

Alaska is the only state in the country with no Medicare Advantage plans, which makes your Medigap decision more important than anywhere else. For most Alaska seniors, State Farm at $137/mo is the best value: lowest Plan G in the state, A++ rated, and a strong local agent network. If you qualify for USAA (military or veteran), their $144/mo Plan G with A++ rating is the runner-up. If you want a local carrier with Alaska-specific provider relationships, Premera BCBS of Alaska at $197/mo is worth the premium difference, especially if you enroll in AFT to save $5/mo. For healthy seniors who rarely use medical services, Moda Health's High-Deductible Plan G at $51/mo is the most aggressive way to minimize monthly costs.

Alaska Medigap Rules You Should Know

No Medicare Advantage Plans Available in Alaska

Alaska is one of the few states where Medicare Advantage plans are not available. This makes Medicare Supplement (Medigap) the primary way for Alaska seniors to add coverage to Original Medicare. If you are moving to Alaska from another state, you cannot keep a Medicare Advantage plan.

No Birthday Rule or Anniversary Rule

Alaska does not have a birthday rule or anniversary rule. Outside of your 6-month Open Enrollment Period when you first turn 65 and enroll in Part B, you will face medical underwriting if you try to switch Medigap carriers. This makes your initial plan choice especially important.

Standard 6-Month Open Enrollment Period

Federal law gives you a 6-month Open Enrollment Period starting the month you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B. During this window, no carrier can deny you coverage or charge higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions. This is the best and often only time to lock in coverage without health questions.

Under-65 Coverage Not Required

Alaska does not require Medigap carriers to offer coverage to Medicare beneficiaries under age 65 (such as those with disabilities). If you are under 65 and on Medicare in Alaska, you may have difficulty finding Medigap coverage. Some carriers offer it voluntarily at higher rates.

Excess Charges Are Allowed in Alaska

Alaska does not ban Medicare excess charges. Providers who do not accept Medicare assignment can charge up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount. Plan G covers these excess charges; Plan N does not. In rural Alaska especially, confirm your providers accept Medicare assignment before choosing Plan N.
