An OTC benefit card is a prepaid card loaded by your Medicare Advantage plan with a set allowance each month or quarter. You can use it to purchase approved over-the-counter health products at participating retailers. Original Medicare does not include this benefit.

What Can You Buy with an OTC Card?

Eligible items vary by plan but typically include:

  • Pain relievers, cold and allergy medications

  • Vitamins and supplements

  • First aid supplies (bandages, antiseptics)

  • Blood pressure monitors and glucose testing supplies

  • Dental care products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, denture adhesive)

  • Eye drops and vision care products

  • Incontinence supplies (on some plans)

Allowances Vary Widely by Plan

OTC card allowances range from around $25 to over $150 per month depending on the plan. Unused balances typically do not roll over to the next period, so use your allowance before it expires.

Where Can You Use It?

Most OTC cards are accepted at major retailers including CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Rite Aid. Some plans also allow online ordering through a dedicated OTC catalog. Check your plan's Summary of Benefits or member portal for the full list of participating locations.
